Oh, I must find rest in God only,
because my hope comes from him!
(Psalm 62:5)
This past July while camping in the mountains of Central Java, I decided to go for a walk in the rice fields that surrounded the small campground where we were staying for the night. Rice fields are amazing, with each section at a different stage of growth — ready for planting, newly planted, deep green rice paddy, and the distinctive yellow paddy ready to be harvested.
As I walked, snapping photos along the way, I came across this small hut in the middle of the field. It was a resting stop constructed simply of bamboo slats 3 feet above the paddy with a covering of banana leaves, coconut fronds, and other dried vegetation. It was crudely made, but I’m sure it served its purpose.
I could easily imagine a rice farmer, tired from working all morning in the hot sun sitting down with a coffee or tea to rest, perhaps even taking a nap. In the tropics, getting out of the sun is important because the sun is direct and the humidity is heavy.
In life, too, rest is important.
Take time to rest.
Take time to play.
Take time to enjoy this world and the important people in your life.
Love turns work into rest.
(Teresa of Avila)
So you see that a sabbath rest is left open for God’s people. The one who entered God’s rest also rested from his works, just as God rested from his own.
(Hebrews 4:9-10)
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
(John Lubbock, The Use of Life)
Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves.
(Matthew 11:29)
