Was this the state of the earth before God’s creative work or the result of God’s creative act before the first day of creation in Genesis 1?
Either way, we see a profound truth— amidst chaos and darkness, the Spirit of God is present, ready to bring about order, life, and purpose. In the midst of our formlessness and emptiness, too, God’s Spirit hovers, bringing transformation and renewal.
Just as God spoke light into the darkness, God can speak life and purpose into our brokenness. May we open ourselves to the transforming power of the Spirit and trust in His ability to bring order and beauty out of chaos.

4th of July Reflection
Back in the day, when I was teaching middle school mathematics, I would ask my students if they thought other countries had a July 4th. Completely unrelated to math, I know. But when teaching middle school, sometimes one does what one must do to get through the day. :-)
