God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness.
—Genesis 1:4 (CEB)
God separated the darkness from the light. This separation, we are told, is good and represents the Creator’s first act of ordering…arranging…instilling purpose into the creation.
Light is necessary for the remaining creative process, too. Vegetation needs light to grow; wildlife needs light to survive. Time itself is ordered according to the cyclical alternation between darkness and light.
Darkness, however, in time would also come to symbolize that which is disordered in our world and not according to God’s purpose, as it should be. Sin, as we read in the early chapter of Genesis, brought spiritual darkness that once again covered the face of the earth, rendering humanity formless, empty, and, once again, in chaotic disorder.
God’s creative work of redemption and reordering did not end on the seventh day but continues throughout Scripture and history until today.
